Portrait

Stevie Manns

Stevie Manns is a Scottish singer/songwriter and podcaster who’s been based in New York for the past few years. We connected on social media some years back and we’ve been discussing a possible shoot ever since. It finally happened during Stephanie’s most recent visit to Glasgow in September 2019. We shot in Kelvingrove Park and Charing X back lanes, all natural light. It was a pleasure! Enjoy.

Brooks Williams

I met Brooks Williams in November 2018 when I was photographing him and Rab Noakes for their joint tour. We got on very well and when Brooks was finishing work on his latest solo album “Work My Claim” last summer, he got in touch asking me to shoot the album promo. The photos were taken in a back alley in Finnieston as well as Kyoti Recording Studio. Have a look:

Dog Digital

There are several interesting things about this particular shoot but none more so than the fact these images were taken late February in Glasgow - scroll down, have a look and call me a liar, I won’t blame you. But it was full on sun, clear blue skies, the works. Sometimes you just get lucky (or it’s global warming). Either way, the shoot was for Dog Digital, an award winning marketing agency based in Glasgow’s city centre. They were looking for portrait images of some members of their team and wanted a contemporary, urban feel with the city of Glasgow as the backdrop. The challenge was to feature the city but without making it too obvious so we focused on lines, textures and angles. Kirsty and Stuart from I’ll Be Your Mirror were in charge of styling the shoot (and, as ever, were a dream to work with) and Beccy Goldinger took care of hair and make up. The shoot was long and took 3 days to complete but it was actually very relaxed and fun. It’s always easy when you work with nice people. Check some of the images below:

New Year, New Decade

I thought to myself, does anyone want to read another post from a stranger writing about what this past decade meant to them? Probably not. You’ve been warned then, and can just scroll down to the pretty pictures cause I’m diving in!

I don’t know why we feel compelled as humans to do these end-of-year/decade/whatever lists but for me, there can be something comforting about it. My memory is pretty crap and I tend to forget the bad things that happen to me quite quickly, or at least I can’t recall the details so their impact is diminished. I therefore focus on the positives and it always ends up being a hopeful exercise - cause if you can find something good in the past year for example, no matter how challenging it might’ve been overall, chances are there’s more good to come in the 12 months ahead

So 2019 was definitely a strange one - a lot of soul searching, figuring out myself and what I want from life and my career. I took up horse riding which I’m thoroughly enjoying, started meditating (thus becoming the kind of person I would roll my eyes at only five years ago) and reconnected with some old friends. The main event however was my first solo exhibition. It took months of preparations and help from a lot of people as well as shitloads of anxiety but it couldn’t have gone better in the end and its reception was beyond anything I could’ve hoped for.

As for 2010s, it was a decade of some big personal decisions like leaving my job to become a full time photographer and buying a flat with my partner. But when I look back at it, it’s actually the people who stand out more than anything. The friendships and connections I made, something that came as a surprise byproduct of what I do but that is definitely one of the nicest, most rewarding things about my job.

Here’s to 2020 and to the new decade then. Leaving you with some of my favourite shots from last year (I did toy with the idea of compiling a ‘best of the decade’ selection but the task seems way too daunting just now):

Barbra Kolasinski

Barbra Kolasinski is a luxury Scottish womenswear brand - her stuff is beautiful, colourful and unique. She’s also a friend of mine - we met on a shoot a while back and hit it off. I love her use of colour and textures in her work and wanted to photograph her for some time. We finally made it happen this summer - check out some of the images below.
