Horse on the Roof

Photographing Horse McDonald on the roof of the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow

I’ve worked with Horse for many years now and photographed her in all sorts of venues and locations, from Strachur to St. Cyrus Beach, from the Panopticon to Theatre Royal, the Barrowlands Ballroom to Scottish National Portrait Gallery. I could go on. However, I’d never had the pleasure of photographing her singing live on the rooftop of one of Glasgow’s most iconic venues. To be fair, nobody has ever been allowed to perform on the roof of the Pavilion Theatre before, and given the amount of health and safety-related paperwork involved, I doubt anyone will ever again. The stunt took place earlier this month and was promoting Horse’s live gig at the Pavilion Theatre (the proper seated bit this time). The concert took place last Friday, and you can find a few images from both events below.

Soul Nation Choir

Soul Nation Choir, run by the incredibly talented Chris Judge, is a Scottish rock choir that blends pop, soul and gospel in their performances. The best of the best vocal talents have gone through its ranks: X-Factor contestants, Bafta winners, West End stars - you name it. I've been photographing them since the choir's inception some 5 years ago: from candid, behind-the-scenes moments to images taken on music video shoots and during numerous live appearances. It's always a joy to work with them, I've made some friends along the way and I thought it was about time I compiled and shared some of my favourite images taken during these past 5 years. Enjoy and catch them live if you get a chance - they'll leave you smiling for days.

Nicole Caldwell

You may have seen Nicole Caldwell belting out "Purple Rain" on the X-Factor recently. I've been a fan of her voice ever since I've heard her perform with Soul Nation Choir a few years ago. Being able to finally work with Nicole on her very first photoshoot as a solo artist was a great opportunity. And a lot of fun! The brief was "bohemian/hippie/natural" so off we went last month to Mugdock Country Park (one of my favourite places to shoot) with Caroline Stewart on makeup duties and spent an evening walking about, laughing and talking nonsense. Oh yes, and we took some photos too. Enjoy!

PS. Big thanks to David for all the help!
