Doing This For Love
Kris Drever - PROMO, artwork and Queen's Hall.
I was introduced to Kris Drever by Boo Hewerdine a few years ago, photographing the two of them together for a concert promo. We got on very well and I've worked with Kris ever since. This year that meant covering his new album campaign from studio to stage.
The promo shoot took place in December at Basement49 in Glasgow. I went in with Irving Penn's iconic Small Trades series as a loose starting point - a series built around tradespeople and workers, photographed with real dignity and weight. It felt right given the title track, Doing This For Love, can be interpreted as being about graft and money worries and getting through the day for the people you love rather than the work itself. We ended up somewhere quite different on the day, improvising a lot, including some long exposure and light painting shots that made their way into the album booklet.
The album is out now, it’s truly beautiful and I designed the full packaging for it as well. The front cover image actually started life as a video Kris shot on his phone while driving in the rain - something I adapted into the final artwork. Below is a selection from the studio session, the artwork, and the live show at Queen's Hall in Edinburgh - no brief beyond "would you like to come and film and take some pictures," which is honestly my favourite kind of invite.
