Competition Hair for Toni & Guy Glasgow.

I’ve been photographing competition entries for Toni & Guy Glasgow since 2015. Somewhere along the way the stylists became friends, and the salon became where I get my hair cut (every four weeks, like clockwork).

I’ve learned a lot on these jobs. They’re unlike my usual work and need a slightly different way of thinking. As a portrait photographer, my instinct is to focus on the person in front of the camera, but here the cut and the colour matter just as much, and the pictures have to show them off as well as the model.

For years the team made it to the finals without quite getting over the line. Then, in 2023, they won the L’Oréal Colour Trophy for Scotland and came second in the whole of the UK – their best result yet, and one I’m taking a very small amount of credit for.
